Russian first full-cycle plant for processing White Sea algae was opened in Karelia

A production complex with a total area of nearly 3,000 square meters was built in the village of Berezovka in the Kondopozhsky District. The investment exceeded 500 million rubles. The facility will create approximately 100 jobs.

The new plant in Karelia is the Russian first full-cycle facility for processing White Sea algae, laminaria and fucus. This large-scale project was implemented under the concession agreement between the regional government and the company “Biomedical Innovation Technologies”. The production complex is owned by the republic.

The plant will use the White Sea brown algae, which is unique in its chemical composition, to produce baby vitamin nutrition, dietary supplements, and therapeutic dietary products.

The head of the republic, Artur Parfenchikov, expressed confidence that the enterprise will become the flagship of the Karelian industry and the pride of the country.

– Karelia is taking a step forward in marine resource processing. This is a practical response to the objectives set by the Russian President to achieve technological sovereignty within the framework of the national project “Bioeconomy ”. The launch of the plant marks transition from primary to advanced algae processing. For Berezovka and the Kondopozhsky District, it means new high-tech jobs, territorial development, and associated infrastructure, – commented Artur Parfenchikov.

At the opening of the enterprise, the Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, Ilya Shestakov, noted that Karelia is one of the leading regions for aquaculture production with great potential.

– One of the innovative areas in this field is algae. We need to reach a new level, train specialists, and implement measures that will significantly increase algae use efficiency. Russia has a vast resource base for this, – the head of “Rosrybolovstvo” emphasized.

The plant will produce 10,000 tons of finished products per year. The exit to full capacity is scheduled for 2027.

In the near future, Karelia will become the main production site for the NPO “BIT” in algae processing. This will create a fully-fledged biotechnology cluster in the republic, combining raw material extraction, production, and research. The company is a strategic partner of the Kurchatov Institute and utilizes the best domestic developments in its production. The company will train personnel in collaboration with Petrozavodsk State University.

To celebrate the plant opening, a gala event and a concert will be held in Kondopoga, featuring over 700 guests and an honorary guest, Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov.

As a reminder, a land plot for construction of the plant was selected and the design work was completed with the assistance of the Government of the Republic.
